Excerpt
from "Loyalty"
The Father set upon the hill, watching the
family and watching the river, they were on an outing, a
day of relaxation and rest, a picnic. Maximum was not able
to rest; his spirit felt the foreboding of danger, the river
looked to be calm, the currents seem to be slow, but Maximum
knew that the calmness of the river was deceiving, and he
knew that the current was deadly because of the run-off
from the melting snow. He could not shake the feeling of
apprehension; he would continue to be on alert, he would
continue to watch the three boys as they played, his two
sons Toby and Rex, and his best friend son, Johnny.
His mate, Molly-girl, tried to get him to
go to the table and snack on the tidbits that were left
over from the family’s lunch but he could not leave
his post with each movement of the sun the feelings of dread
grew.
John approached him from the other side of
the hill, John had gone fishing and was returning with a
string of trout he came and stood by Maximum, John spoke
as he held up the line of fish. “Hey see what you
missed out on bud.” John patted Maximum on the shoulder
as he set down by him. “I missed you MaximPal.”
